Design and Technology Statement of Intent

Design and technology develops children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food. It encourages children’s creativity and encourages them to think about important issues and prepares them for the on-going innovations and developments in our world. 

At Simms Cross Primary School our aims for design and technology are that children will develop knowledge, skill and understanding in all strands whilst employing and expanding on knowledge from other subjects such as Science and Mathematics. Design and technology involves selecting appropriate materials for an intended purpose and it is this decision making process, as well as the aesthetic design, that children will be able to have an active role in the creativity and durability of their product. 

The National Curriculum of 2014 states that “Learning to cook is a crucial life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life.” At Simms Cross Primary School children are taught to understand what constitute a healthy and varied diet, prepare a selection of dishes which include a variety of cooking techniques, understanding seasonality and food culture and learn how ingredients are either grown, reared or caught. 

Critical evaluation of a product is a useful skill taught throughout all strands of design and technology. This is a valuable and transferable skill to develop throughout all aspects of life and reflection on decisions made is a significant part of the process at Simms Cross Primary School.
