Phonics Statement of Intent

At Simms Cross Primary School children learn to read using a systematic, synthetic phonics programme called Read Write Inc. These lessons enable the children to learn to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension.

Throughout the programme, children learn the alphabetic code: the 150+ graphemes that represent 44 speech sounds which are organised into 3 sets of sounds. The lessons are fun and enjoyable and follow a simple structure so that the children can learn the letter-sound correspondences quickly.

Lessons involve learning a new sound, followed by a reading session specific to the child’s phonetic reading ability. Repeated reading of the texts allows the children to build confidence and fluency with new vocabulary.

Reading books are then sent home which match the phonics programme allowing the children continued practise in decoding words with sounds they have learnt in school. Children are assessed every 6 weeks to ensure progress is tracked and they are accessing the correct level of reading.

In phonics today we looked at the split digraph i-e. We call these letters special friends as they work together to make a sound. The hardest word we spelt today was conspire but using phonics made this easy. #SimmsCrossPhonics
